Albert joined the National Guard at the age of 16 and was called to active duty in November 1942 aged 18. He did his pilot training in Texas, checked out on the B-17 in New Mexico then picked up his crew in Tampa Florida. Assigned to the 452nd at Deopham Green he flew on 30 combat missions, 20 as lead or deputy lead. He participated in the second shuttle mission to Russia where he had his first taste of vodka and was 'not impressed'!.His final mission was on to the submarine pens at Hamburg where they were hit by flak and fighters whilst struggling against a headwind and lost seven planes from the Group. He was discharged in October 1945 and afterwards went into construction.

Al was my grandfather -- one of the finest men I've ever known. He died aged 89, in Des Moines, Iowa.
