V9741

Westland Lysander V9741, assigned to 2025th Gunnery Flight, 6th Fighter Wing, 8AF USAAF. Ditched Engine Failure, crashed 15M SW Barmouth, Wales. 27-Mar-43.

A/C crash report: - "The crew comprised F/O Alexander Lilley and Obs Pvt Julius C Edwardson. Lilley's report states that the A/C took off from Llanbedr for the target towing at 10:15am. The A/C reached the northern edge of the range and turned for its first run at 6000ft on a bearing of 180 degrees magnetic and let out the target drogue. Fifteen minutes later at 10:30am, the engine failed. Unable to get it to restart, the Lilley ordered Edwardson to put on his parachute, to open his hood and to release the drogue. He then trimmed the aircraft to fly at 60mph, turned it on its side and ordered Edwardson to jump. The engine would still not respond and so the Lilley turned off the gas cock and also baled out. The pilot of a P47, who was to have fired at the drogue, stated that he saw the Observer in the water. However, Edwardson was later confirmed as missing. Lilley believed that the fault was most likely to have been electrical. The A/C was destroyed."
