B-24 Liberator

The B-24D Liberator, 41-11817, named, Stinger, was flown by Lt. Andrew Opsata and copilot Lt. Donald Di Coscoe, out of Benghazi, Libya, on Operation Tidal Wave, the Ploesti oil refinery bombing mission. They returned safely to Libya with only one crew member injured, Gunner John Gormey, who was struck by flak splinters. WIA. On the Ploesti mission, Stinger's pilot was Lt. Opsata, and it's navigator was Maj Howard Lalonde, who had also flown on the B-24D, Old Blister Butt. Lt. Opsata and Maj. LaLonde were initially deployed with the 8th Air Force's 389th Bombardment Group, to Hethel, England, in June of 1943. Shortly after arriving at Hethel, the entire 389th Bomb Group moved, again, to Benghazi, Libya, in preparation for Operation Tidal Wave. LaLonde may have participated in several missions prior to Operation Tidal Wave, on, the B-24D, Old Blister Butt. While in Libya, Lt. Opsata, Lt. LaLonde and their bomber crew were temporarily deployed (TDY) to the 9th Air Force's 98th Bomb Group and reassigned to the B-24D Bomber, 41-11817, Stinger. Family archive photos, as well as photos on the internet, show that Opsata's regular plane had probably been the B-24D Bomber, 42-40776, Old Blister Butt. Major Lalonde had his wife's name, Glenda, painted on Stinger's fuselage below the navigator's window where he was stationed on the plane.
