Capt Frederick H Ihlenburg was the pilot aboard "Quittin' Time" on the 8-May-44 mission to Berlin. - "The oxygen ran out, we had to leave formation; 6 x e/a attacked, shooting out #2 engine and both gas tanks in left wing, ball and tail gunners shot down a Me109 each, we lost another engine and the radio, ball gunner was hit in turret, removing himself to the radio room where he and the radio operator were hit in yet another attack. The top turret gunner was knocked out of his turret, having been hit in the neck and eye. Over the channel, e/a abandoned us, to our fate and whilst some of the crew attended to the wounded, others ejecting everything to get the weight down. Emeregency boost got us just over the White Cliffs and we landed at RAF Manston, whereupon touching down one of the wings pretty much broke off, we had 5 spars cut and counted some 67 holes."
