Originally an RAF grass airfield, Balderton was developed as an RAF bomber base with hard runways in 1942-43. The Ninth Air Force's 437th Troop Carrier Group and 439th Troop Carrier Group used the airfield in 1944, before it was handed back to the RAF. It was used as an RAF bomb store until closure in 1954. The site was returned to agriculture in the 1950s and 1960s, and was also used for gypsum open-cast mining.
