Detailed History

On 29 November 1944 A-26 Invaders 43-22298 and 43-22336 crashed into Warton Marsh, as a result of a mid-air collision. The two aircraft were being ferried from Warton Airfield to Bretigny in France by personnel of the 641st Bombardment Group, United States Army 9th Air Force. The collision occurred immediately after take off, all the crews were killed. The remains of the aircraft were buries in sand and silt.



The aircraft were excavated as part of Channel 4's "Time Team" television series in July 2005.
