Detailed History
The original 34th Bomb Group memorial stood at the side of the busy A140, and was of cast bronze. The metal plaque was stolen, leaving only the brick foundation. The Parish of Mendlesham took it upon themselves to replace that memorial. They received support from several quarters, and a new slate and brick memorial was dedicated on 9 November 2014, with the Bishop of Richborough presiding. The memorial now stands in the churchyard.
Thank you usexpat for all the above information - it would've come in handy earlier today - 2 May 2015, as I had the chance to visit this memorial today. It was well sign-posted off the A140 road, but after that, nothing. I had to ask in a local shop in Mendlesham village for its location.
It would be good if there was also a 'unit connection' on this site for memorials such as this.
