Cemetery

Detailed history

The Brookwood American Cemetery and Memorial is a First World War American Cemetery in Brookwood, Surrey. The site holds the remains of 468 military dead from the American Expeditionary Forces, many who died in hospitals in London or during naval campaigns. The names of 563 fallen servicemen from the US Navy and Coast Guard lost or buried at sea are also honoured on the Wall of Missing.

A cemetery was first established at Brookwood in 1852, in 1917 an area of land was set aside for the burial of Commonwealth and American forces. The American cemetery was established in 1918. Following the end of the First World War, the remains of fallen American servicemen and victims killed in the sinking of SS TUSCANIA by U-Boat UB-77 in February 1918 were reinterred at Brookwood from temporary cemeteries across the United Kingdom and Ireland. The cemetery was designed by American architect Egerton Swartwout and British architect Harry Bulkeley Creswell, it was dedicated in 1937. The Brookwood American Cemetery is owned and maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission.

Brookwood American Cemetery

The cemetery lies close to the Brookwood Military Cemetery which commemorates British, Commonwealth and Allied dead from the First and Second World Wars. The headstones of American airmen who flew with the RAF during the Second World War can be found in resting in the south-east corner dedicated to RAF servicemen. The Brookwood Military Cemetery is owned and maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
