Mr. and Mrs. Everett Hughes of Piggott received a telegram Monday, November the 20th from the War Department, informing them that their son, Captain George Hughes, was killed in action on May 12, 1944 over Germany.
Captain Hughes, aged 27, had previously been reported missing and no further information was had until the telegram came.
He was an outstanding graduate of the Piggott High School and a high ranking one at the University of Arkansas. He was also a graduate of Little Rock Business School.
He entered the Quartermaster's Corps of the service and served there for some time but was transferred to the AAF in January, 1943. He reached England in March, 1944 and was shot down on his first mission.

The body of Captain George Hughes , son of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Hughes arrived here Wednesday from overseas for burial.
Captain Hughes was first reported missing in action in May of 1944 on a bombing mission in Germany. No further news was received from him until November 29, 1944, when Mr. and Mrs. Hughes received a telegram from the War Department informing that he had been killed May 12, 1944.
The funeral was held at the First Baptist Church in Piggott, Thursday, February 9, at 2:00 p.m. conducted by Rev. J. O. Young, pastor of the church.
Burial was in the Piggott Cemetery with Military and Masonic Rites at the grave. Wallain-Mowery Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
