Shot down 12 December 1942 in B-17F 41-24585 [PU-B] 'Wulfe Hund' while serving as Waist Gunner. Evaded, returning to England on 4-Mar-43. Transferred by to the United States on 10-Mar-43 for Honorable Discharge. Participated in 4 Operations (See Biography events).

The aircraft sustained battle damage and the pilot made a crashlanding on a field in France. TSGT Hartung managed to evade capture.
