On 23 January 1943 in B-17F 41-24567 "Beats Me", 303BG/360BS while serving as Bombardier the aircraft was struck by a bomb dropped from above while on a mission to bomb the port area of Lorient, France. The aircraft crashed in the woods of Bois-de-Queronic near Pluvinger, France. 2Lt McCright was able to bale out of the stricken aircraft an was captured. Prisoner of War (POW). While a prisoner he secretly kept ledgers on all the other prisoners.
