Aircraft Name: Jersey Bounce
Location: Aircraft, Jersey Bounce, crashed near Ploestiori Village, north of the Concordia Vega refineries. Crew of 10 : 6 KIA - 4 POW.
Lt. Lipten lost his life in Operation Tidal Wave, over the Ploesti oil refineries, one of the most dangerous and deadly bombing missions of WWll. Flying in at 29 feet, the 93rd Bomb Group, Ted's Traveling Circus, bombed the oil refineries north of Ploesti at Campina, Romania.
Lt. Lipten in Lt. Worthy Long's crew, were in the right wing position of the second element of C Force, briefed to attack White III. In approach to a target of opportunity, White IV, he saw some B-24s of the 376th Bomb Group crossing his course from the wrong direction in the distance, this caused concerns of a collision as three bomb groups passed through each other. After the bombs were dropped, the B-24D, Jersey Bounce, was hit by flak splinters in it's nose, which mortally wounded Navigator/Nose Gunner Lt. Lipten, and the bombardier. The ship was also attacked by a Rumanian fighter that completely took out the tail turret and killed tail gunner, Leycester. Nos 1 and 4 engines, and the bomb bay, were set on fire. Jersey Bounce, crash landed striking a dirt berm, causing the nose section containing Norm Adams to split off and separate from the plane. The pilots escaped the plane by going out the open nose section. The other waist gunner, TSgt J. Crumley was killed just before the plane hit the ground. Lt. Lipton was hit in the chest by a splinter while they were still in the air. He was trying to get up onto the flight deck when the plane crashed. The pilots and crew were badly burned and were taken to the hospital for treatment, later all of them to become POWs. 1 Aug 1943. MACR 355.
