On 6 May 1995 Lt. Col. Getz was awarded the DFC for a special mission he had flown some 50 years earlier. He was at that time flying a P-51 with the 2nd Air Division, having previously flown a 31 mission tour with the 491st BG.

He retired from the Air Force in 1962 after twenty years' service and had later held senior positions in industry and civil government.

After the war he did Research & Development on the H-bomb and missiles.
