Lt. Woodworth enlisted in the Army Air Corps in January 1942, and completed bombardier training 4 July 1942 at Victorville, California. Assigned to the 305th Bomb Group, he was with the group as they completed training at Muroc, California, then Syracuse, New York, before the the group flew to England in November 1942. Shot down by flak on 23rd mission over Kiel Germany on 19 May 1943 in B-17 # 4124624 "Madame Betterfly", with the plane crashing into the North Sea. He was held as a prisoner of war (POW) at Stalag Luft III. After forced march to Stalag VIIA in January 1945, he and others were liberated from there on 29 April 1945 by elements of Patton's 3rd Army.
