Called to active duty in March 1943 he was accepted into the Aviation Cadet program, did his pilot training and was awarded his wings and commissioned a year later. He joined the Group at Bury St Edmunds and flew the first of 30 combat missions on 1st August 1944. That winter they were plagued by bad weather and in November in heavy snow managed to lift off just before the runway ran out but hit a fence. The bomber following behind was not so lucky, struck the same fence and crashed killing all on board. After his discharge he entered Northwestern university , joined the National Guard and was recalled during the Korean War. He remained in the Air National Guard until 1966 retiring with the rank of Colonel, and from the bank - where he had been employed -as President.
