Military
Lyon Agee Jr enlisted in May 1942 in the Air Corps. After earning his pilot wings, he pursued training in the United States before being shipped overseas. He was assigned to the 406th Fighter Bomber Group/512th Fighter Bomber Squadron in England and was stationed at Ashford, Kent. On 22 June 1944, he was flying his Thunderbolt # 42-75345 on a low-level bombing and strafing mission on German units in the Cherbourg area, France. The formation was attacked by German fighters and Agee reported to wingman 1st Lt Creighton A. Smith that he had been hit. His P-47 was last seen flying above the southern edge of Cherbourg, heading for England. No trace was ever found of him nor of his plane and they were lost in the English Channel.
