Francis was drafted in November 1942, transferred to the Air Corps and trained as a gunner. In July 1944 he sailed to England with 18,000 other American servicemen and eventually joined the Group at Rattlesden. He flew on 30 combat missions,on the 8th -dropping propaganda leaflets- he counted over two hundred holes in 'Little Herbie'. In all their 30 missions no crew member was wounded. Afterwards he returned to Northwest, earned a degree, first farmed then later owned a lumber yard.
