Assigned to the Group at Bury St Edmunds he flew on 28 missions in two and a half months, during which he witnessed two mid-air collisions. On a mission to hit marshalling yards near Paris an anti-aircraft shell pierced a wing, they lost two engines, turned westward and managed to land at an RAF Spitfire base, where they were greeted by a Scottish officer wearing a kilt. In civilian life Tom was a rural postman.
