On 3-Jan-43 in B-24D 41-23771 while serving as Tail Gunner the aircraft made a crash-landing near Puncheston, Pembrokeshire when it ran out of fuel upon return from a mission to bomb the U-Boat pens at St. Nazaire, France. He was not injured and Returned to Duty.



1 October 1943, in ac B-24 41-23936 'Queen Anne' was attacked by fighters on bombing run on Wiener, Austria. 2 crewmembers bailed out near Vienna to become Prisoner of War (POW)s. Pilot Oakley crash landed in British held territory near Foggia, Italy. Young was seriously injured and brought to the nearby British field hospital This unit was on temporary duty with the 9th AAC.
