Killed in Action (KIA). July 9, 1943 on takeoff from Benghazi while TDY to the 9th AF, B24D#42-40779 was hit by enemy fire and caught fire near Crete. This was the first plane and crew lost by the 389th. The 389th was ordered to North Africa in preparation for the Ploesti raid. It reported there before England.
