Gmasher's comment on Fold3 image:

"Although 2LT Virgil C. Johnston, Jr was killed in the crash of this aircraft on 10 June 1944, his remains would not be positively identified for over six months. Advancing Allied ground forces recovered his remains and buried him in a U.S. military cemetery, identified only as the pilot of "War Bond Plane 21." Republic Aviation company records had to be consulted to verify the actual serial number, which in turn was traced to the unit assigned - and to its pilot at the time of its loss."
