Vern was born October 31, 1920 in Conneaut, OH to Thomas and Rose Coe. He graduated from Lakewood High School in Lakewood, OH in 1938. Vern enlisted in the Army Air Corp during WWII where he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and an Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters. Vern flew 38 missions as a pilot of B-24 Bombers in the European Theatre as well as other assignments during the war. He later graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toledo where he was on the Dean’s list and the captain of the tennis team.
Vern worked his entire career for the railroad retiring in 1986 as President and CEO of Kansas City Terminal Railroad. He was a founding member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and a member of Blue Hills Country Club for over 40 years.
