Later chosen as one of 12 bombardiers to go to the Radar Bombing school in Boca Raton FL.
Flew 35 combat missions over Germany
Flew 35 combat missions, all over Germany. Forced down Jan. 1 1945 just over German lines during battle of the Bulge. Landed outside Brussels with seriously wounded waist gunner. I had given him a morphine injection for pain at 25,000 ft. when he was wounded. Able to guide B-17 back to base with zero visibility using the G-Box navigation equipment, while flying as Navigator with another crew. First mission to Politz on 10/7/44 I saw V2 rockets being launched from Peenemunde toward England
Admitted to collage of Physicians and Surgeons in Columbia and graduated in 1953
Awards:
DFC; Air Medal w 6/Oak Leaf Cluster; EAME Medal w 3battle stars, Marksman Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Pres. Unit Citation
Received the French Legion of Honor Medal in 2015 for role of the 8th Air Force in The Battle of the Bulge.
