He crossed into France near Givet and made contact with the FFI through a girl cow-herder. They took his picture and confirmed his identity. He moved into the woods with the Maquis whom he left after a fire fight with the Germans. He headed back into Belgium and contacted the Belgian UG at a farmhouse where he received medical treatment for trench foot and scabies. The Belgian UG moved him through a number of safe houses until he finally arrived at Theux which is halfway between Liege and Malmedy. There he stayed with Mme. Pagnoule who had a son, Paul.
