From the Find-a-Grave entry for Bill Soules, buried in the Coalgate Ok Cemetery:
Bill was the son Of Claude B. Soules and Belle Louise Murphy. He was married to Joy Evelyn Garner on 23 June 1945 at Lehigh, Coal Co., Oklahoma.
Bill was a B17 pilot in World War II and was the head of his class at flight school. Lt. Soules was in the lead B17 bomber on a mission on 25 April 1944. The plane caught fire from the right wing to the bomb bay and crashed near St.Germain 25 miles SW of Bernay, France on 25 April 1944. The crew of 11 bailed out at about 20,000 ft. Five were captured, five escaped and one was M.I.A. Bill Soules spent about 12 months in German captivity at and in route to various prison camps. He spent time in Stalag Luft III, the prison camp made famous in the Movie "The Great Escape". He was liberated in April 29, 1945. All 11 men in his crew were reported seen or heard from since liberation by fellow POW Capt. Edward M. Bender after the war. Lt. Bill Soules was one of our many American heroes in World War II, especially to his family, friends and the town of Coalgate, Oklahoma.
