ort was a WWII hero and the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross awarded on August 5th, 1944. Mort enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps on December 12th, 1942 at the age of 18. On March 20th, 1944, he was transferred along with his B-17 Crew to a base in a town called Bury St. Edmunds, England in Suffix. He would fly over forty missions in a B-17 over Europe. On June 6th, 1944 (D-Day), Mort would fly two missions into France, one ahead of our troops landing and one later in the afternoon for the advancing troops. Also, two missions he was very proud of were later in June and July of 1944 where he dropped vital supplies to the French resistance in the town of Vecours, France. Mort received his honorable discharge on October 16th, 1945. Mort responded to his country's call once again to support the Korean War. He re-enlisted with the Air Force on September 11th, 1950. He was assigned to Travis AFB where he was the Master of Ceremonies for the USO and other entertainment activities at the base. He received his second honorable discharge in December of 1942.
