Leon Edwin Levens

Military

Leon Levens was Co-Pilot on his 4th mission when B-17G #42-31050 crashed for unknown reasons (possibly Flak, then enemy fighters...) on the mission to Frankfurt on 29 January 1944. Evaded with the help of Belgian citizens and members of the Résistance. Last hidden in Brussels until the city was liberated at the beginning of September 1944 (EVD). Escape & Evasion Report E&E 2139. He mentions there that he was with his Ball Turret Gunner Sgt Malcom F. Eckleberry all the time. See Leon Levens's page at http://www.evasioncomete.be/flevensle.html

His Grand Daughter Leila Lulalevens wrote "My grandfather was in the world war 2 as a co-pilot after he had jumped out of a plane he landed on his privates right on a fence! A French woman which I do not know the name of helped him and they soon fell in love while he hid from the enemies at her home. After he was sent home he had never seen her again there are pictures and she was quite beautiful after my grandpa went home he never saw that woman again and got married to his wife in America and had 5 children. That is his war story. Unfortunately Leon E. Levens passed away about a month ago and he will forever be missed".

"My grandfather was such a wonderful person who loved the company of anybody after his children grew up he lived with his daughter and from the age of his 70's to 90's he created his backyard into a beautiful garden, I think that was his favorite thing to do make it gorgeous and colorful and sit with his family and talk with them. The war seemed to not have effected his life in any way he was such a wonderful man who will be missed dearly."

- Leila Lulalevens - User https://www.americanairmuseum.com/user/6966
- source message from user Edouard RENIERE (https://www.americanairmuseum.com/user/919) - I've just seen today the lines written on this page (under "Enlisted") in 2015 by Leon's granddaughter. Would it be possible to let her know I could supply details she seems to ignore about her Grandfather's evasion in Belgium (not France !...) Your staff has my e-mail address and you could send it to her. Merci.
