On 3 January 1943 in B-24 41-23371 while serving as Assistant Radio Operator the aircraft crashed near the crossroads south of Puncheston, Pembrokeshire upon returning from a mission to bomb the U-Boat pens at St. Nazaire, France. Fuel shortage caused the crash. Romeo was injured and hospitalized until 6 January 1943. Copilot Canfield was killed and the only fatality.
