Description: FIGHTER-BOMBER MISSION

Notes: A mix of 320 P-38s (67 from 9th AF), P47s and P-51s support the First Allied Airborne Army in the Nijmegen area. OPERATION MARKET GARDEN ends failing to make all objectives. However, IX Troop Carrier Command has shown its mettle dispatching 3,996 aircraft of which 3,634 completed their missions; despatched 1,899 gliders of which 1,635 are successful; loses only 98 aircraft and 137 gliders; dropped 30,841 paratroopers; dropped 1,001 vehicles, dropped 463 artillery pieces; and dropped 3,559 tons of other equipment and fuel.
