Leonard, 22, of Thorndike, Me., engineer aboard one of the Fortress bombers which attacked Regensburg on August 17, flew on to North Africa and returned to Britain on August 24, bombing an aircraft assembly plant in Bordeaux, enemy-occupied France, in daylight during the journey home, seen with souvenirs of his visit to Africa. He is wearing a fez, and sits on the nose of a Heinkel destroyed in the Middle East fighting. The gun is a 30-calibre German machine gun - a relic of the desert fighting which ended in the expulsion of the Axis from the whole African continent. Sgt. Leonard shot down a Messerschmitt 109 during the raid on Regensburg. TET 259972. 25-8-43-U.'
