IMAGEP-47 Thunderbolts of 78th Fighter Group prepare for take-off. Passed for publication 28 October 1943. Printed caption on reverse: 'Thunderbolts - the "Guardian Angels" of Flying Fortresses. Here are pictures of Thunderbolts P-47s, the famous American fighter planes, which escort Flying Fortresses on their daylight missions over Occupied Europe. Photo shows: - One of the most unusual shots that happen over England. A Fortress landed at the Thunderbolt station from a raid over Germany. The battle-damage to the plane was being repaired, so the photographer got a shot from under the wing of the Fort of several Thunderbolts getting ready for a take-off on another mission to the Reich. Some of the Thunderbolts are in the air all ready (in the background). This is quite a different sight than the Germans usually see - their usual glimpse of Fortresses and Thunderbolts is in battle formation, with the Thunderbolts in their usual role as protectors for the big bombers.
