The insignia of the 859th Bomb Squadron, 492nd Bomb Group. Written on slide casing: 'The Happy Warrior.' Family of 859th CO, Lt. Col. James J. Mahoney, has the original art shown in these photographs, from Mahoney's shadow box. The artist was a baker who was taken ill at Alamagordo, NM, and did not move overseas with the group. Post-war 492nd Bomb Group Association named their newsletter 'Happy Warrior." When men and machines of the original 492nd BG (H) were reassigned, the 859th became the new 788th BS (467th BG, Rackheath) and tried to get this recognized as their official squadron insignia, but first 467th CO required that the moonshine jug be replaces with a cal .50 machine gun!
