I am Susan Thompson. My father was Robert D. Thompson who was also on the plane shot down in July of 1944 and who Mr. Lincoln refers to in his story. Decades later, unfortunately after my father had already passed, I was put in touch with Mr. Lincoln who shared this story with me. (He has since passed away also.)
