Second page of the letter written by Sgt. Robert Fox to Peter Igoe's mother on November 15, 1944. Considering Sgt. Fox's condition, both physical and mental, he closes with some downright poetic reminiscing about him and Pete talking about dying, how Pete died doing his job and then makes me tear up by writing: "...the thought that many boys all over the world are dying for the same cause that Pete was fighting for." Somehow, that one sentence seems to sum up the entire sweep of history from that tumultuous time. Thank you Bob Fox. If he is still alive he would be in his late 90s. My father, Donald Lloyd Moore, just passed away on January 11, 2021. He was 98 and was a WW II Navy Seabee and was a living history treasure in his own right. His memories of his time in the Pacific war are still clear and vivid. Especially interesting are his stories of being in Tokyo Japan after the war was over. Don Moore was born on January 3, 1923 and died at 98 years old. Peter Igoe was born exactly 6 months later - June 3, 1923. Warren G. Harding was President. Point is, if Pete Igoe had survived? Maybe he would be about to celebrate his 98th birthday! Peter Igoe's brother - William Igoe - is still alive. I think he is 96. He has much to say about his brother, Pete. He too is a WW II veteran. I will continue to rummage through our family archives ( a footlocker with a lot of stuff like these letters I am uploading in it) to learn if Robert Fox ever did visit the Igoe family in Oak Park Illinois. Also, he requests a "picture of Pete" in a little P.S. in the letter. Knowing my Grandma Mamie (she lived with my family until she passed in 1963 - I was 11 years old and remember her well), she almost certainly obliged his request for a picture.
