Captain John S. Young was in the 344th Bomb Squadron of the 98th Bomb Group, The "Pyramiders". He flew as copilot of the B-24, 'Hail Columbia', with Col. John R. Kane on the mission to bomb Ploesti. His friend, Lt. Robert Nespor was assigned to fly John Young's plane, 'KICKAPOO', on the Ploesti mission. Lt. Nespor was killed at Lete, Benghazi, when 'KICKAPOO' lost an engine and crashed in flames, just after taking off for the Ploesti mission, August 1, 1943.
