B-17G 43-38014 of the 305th BG, 422nd Sqd. was hit over Merseburg, Germany by flak. Radio operator reported smoke coming into the cabin but the source was not found. After safely landing and debriefing, ground crew called the aircrew over to show them flak damage above. Shrapnel had hit the wing and was smoldering near the wing fuel tanks, fortunately the fuel did not catch fire or explode. Photo taken by 2nd Lt. Don Muckerman, Navigator on this aircraft.
