First Lieutenant Francis C. Prendergast, 447th Bomb Group . He joined the Group at Rattlesden in March 1944. He flew two missions on D-Day; returning from the second his aircraft ran off the runway and struck another bomber fully loaded with bombs and gas; amazingly it didn't explode. After the war he transferred to ATC in Bermuda as a navigator on an air-sea rescue C-54. and - following his discharge in October 1948 -attended Iowa State University, resumed farming and joined the Iowa Air National Guard, from which he retired in 1964 with the rank of Lt. Colonel.
