IMAGEPrivate O.L. Burns of the 386th Bomb Group gives his fellow airman Private Lloyd E. Yates a haircut. Image stamped on reverse: 'Keystone Press.' [stamp], 'Passed for publication 30 Spe 1943.' [stamp] and '285967.' [Censor no.] Printed caption on reverse: Printed caption on reverse: 'AMERICA'S "RED DEVIL" [a censor has omitted 'Red Devil'] FLYERS. USP/2247-15. Even in the combat zone officers and men must give a thought to their personal appearance. Long hair and unshaven faces are not tolerated. In the absence of adequate civilian barber facilities squadrons have set up their own shops. Private Lloyd E. Yates of Dallas, Texas, has his hair cut in a chair he designed and built with the assistance of Private O.L. Burns of Olympia, Washington, who is doing the cutting. The ingenious chair was constructed of scrap lumber, wire, a log and a piece of discarded drainpipe. It is on a swivel, as the back is lowered, so the foot-rest comes up. Affording the customer comfort while he is being shaved. Most of the men, however, shave themselves - and in cold water.'
