IMAGE2Lt Joseph F. Gill, Jr., B-24 Navigator on #42-7554, "Tail End Charlie". Bailed out very late, his parachute caught the back of the aircraft, he was dragged through the air, and only seconds before his B-24 crashed, the lines on his parachute caught a tree freeing him from the B-24 as it crashed ahead of him into the cemetery in Mirns, Netherlands on 22 DEC 1943. A young Dutchman at the time, Leo Bult rode his bicycle to the crash and saw Lt Gill suspended up in air, unconscious, hanging from the tree in the picture. The German Nazi's came later that day, cut him down, and left him for dead. Little did they know that Lt Gill was still alive. He was knocked out for 12 days. He was sent to a German Nazi POW camp. After the war Lt Gill returned to the US and his family and lived a long life back in the US.
