Exeter
AirfieldIWM, Roger Freeman Collection
A private grass airfield 1930s, and Exeter Airport 1938-39, the airfield was also used by National Air Communications (responsible for managing civil flying at the start of the Second World War). Home to part of the Royal Aeronautical Establishment and then the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment, Exeter was also an RAF airfield RAF 1940-44, operating fighters. The Ninth Air Force's 440th Troop Carrier Group moved in in 1944, flying C-47s. From 1944-47 the base was once again an RAF station. It was Exeter (International) Airport with RAF lodgers from 1947-1995, and fully Exeter International Airport from 1974-date.
