9-Nov-42 while ferrying B-17 to UK, crew was instructed to search for missing C-53. B-17 42-5088 crashed near Kjoge Bay and aircraft broke in two. He spent 88 days stranded on the ice with his crew members. He was evacuated out due to his severally frostbitten feet, eventually having both legs amputated below the knee, his weight had dropped from190lb to 80lb.
