2 October 1942 crashed near Corbit, Lincolnshire, on a practice bombing formation in B-17F #41-24492. Cause thought to be structural failure due to dive to save life of gunner who turned blue due to lack of oxygen. Sergeants McAskill and Kellum were only survivors. He only completed 7 missions. After leaving the 306th he was assign to the Combat Crew Training Wing at Bovington, England. He remembers Snuffy Smith was one of his combat refresher students at Bovington prior to his [Snuffy Smith] later transfer to 306 and a late recipient of the CMO. He first flew on Lt. William Ely crew, then Lt John Ryan crew on plane 'Sweet Pea'.

Kellum retired from USAF in 1967 after 24 years service.
