Evaded (EVD) shot down on 6 Mar 1944 in 'Evanton Babe' B-17 G #42-31919. Hit by flak and later by fighters, engine #4 was burning fiercely. In view of the danger of explosion of the gas tanks the Pilot ordered the crew to bail out. 9 airmen jumped when the engine fell off. The pilot then decided to continue his flight to England. Sergeant. Elsberry escaped and returned to England on Nov 27, 1944. This was Mission #13
