Prisoner of War (POW) - crashed near Kirchberg on 9 Feb 45 in P-51 'Kittys Kat' 44-63185

Personal recollections of 82nd Fighter Squadron pilot Huie Lamb:

'Skip and a couple of other American POWs were marched to a POW camp guarded by a couple of German soldiers.

They slept out in the open most of the time. The three would take turns lying on the bottom as the three tried to stay warm through the cold nights.

They would shift position every 30 minutes to try to keep from freezing. Some time they would sleep in a German farm house and Skip would ask to sleep with the pigs as they would keep him warm.

Skip owned a tobacco farm in North Carolina and did real well after he returned home. He married his high school sweetheart and raised a family. I did get to see him again at a P 47 pilots reunion some years ago. I also met his lovely wife.

Skip passed away a few years after that reunion.'.
