Warren E Ryan
Military"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 22 "Biographies", by Charles D Taylor.
Warren was working on the family farm when he enlisted in the summer of 1942 but was not called to active duty until January 1943. Trained as a Radio Operator/Gunner he then got married just before being sent overseas. He flew on 35 missions with the group at Snetterton Heath and kept a diary of them all. Hardly a mission was completed without damage from flak, twice they hit the submarine pens at Hamburg when he saw ten bombers go down. He described mission No 34 as his toughest when the Group lost 6 planes and 54 crewmen. Warren actually arrived home on VE Day and his first child was born two days later.
