Shot down and KIA by flak on June 15, 1944 while strafing near Les Corves, France in P-38J s/n 42-104067 ''Little Bug''. Not identified until 11 Nov 1944 when the mayor of Vernonillet gave the ID number and name of the plane to a group of 11 American soldiers who took part in an Armistice day celebration at the village. The grave had been kept by villagers all that time.
