On 12 February 1944, Lewis survived a mid-air-collision on B-17 42-30752 while at the 395th Combat Crew Training School, Ardmore Army Air Field, Oklahoma. While performing a maneuver the right engines of Lewis' aircraft tore into 42-3048, causing it to crash, and killing 10 people on board. Lewis' aircraft 42-30752 was also severely damaged, but he managed to regain control and land safely.
Lewis was shot down on a mission to Le Bourget on 14 June 1944 in B-17 42-97579, he was taken Prisoner of War at Stalag Luft 7A.
