After completing tour of duty as a Pilot with the 389th BG, Steve was assigned to the 493rd BG  as an Operations Officer on the 10th June 1944 and assumed the duty of Assistant Group Operations Officer.

He received a 7 day furlough dated 22nd June 1944 before returning to duty at Debach

On 22nd July 1944, Steve was killed when he was caught beneath a Command car he was driving when it overturned.
