Thompson joined the Army Air Corps after being in ROTC at Purdue University. His class was graduated early after the Pearl Harbor attack. He rose to the rank of Major and was the ranking officer in the 839th Air Engineer Squadron, part of the 413th Air Service Group, supporting the 305th Bomb Group at Chelveston Air Base in England.
