A farmer before being drafted in December 1943 he trained as a gunner, crewed up and on Thanksgiving Day 1944 crossed the Atlantic to join the Group at Grafton Underwood. He was to fly on 35 missions - 12 in 16 days - several in support of the troops in the Battle of the Bulge. Returning to the States in April 1945 he helped fight fires in Idaho forests until being discharged that October and going back to the farm.
